Project Description

HandBrake is a multi-threaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper and converter. It can encode directly from DVDs (even encrypted ones) or from VIDEO_TS folders. AC3, LPCM, and MPEG audio tracks are supported. The output can be contained in MP4, AVI, or OGM files, and the output audio is encoded in either AAC, MP3, or Vorbis. Other features include support for 2-pass encoding, encoding of two audio tracks, a bitrate calculator, and deinterlacing, cropping, and scaling of the original picture.

HandBrake is no longer limited to DVDs: it will now accept practically any type of video as a source. There is now an official GTK+ graphical interface for Linux. The latest improvements to the H.264 encoding library were integrated. Picture quality was enhanced dramatically through the use of psychovisual rate distortion and adaptive quantization, and there have been significant speed optimizations. HandBrake now offers total control over multiple audio tracks. libdvdcss is used for DVD decryption instead of internal code. Queued jobs are cached to disk for safekeeping between sessions. The presets are now organized in folders and have evolved. HandBrake should now keep audio and video synchronized as well as a DVD player can. A deinterlacer that can be left on all the time without degrading picture quality was added. HandBrake now can encode video using the Theora codec.

Bugfixes were made for missing subtitles, audio glitches with LPCM tracks, and more. Multithreaded H.264 encoding with x264 was added. The option for H.264 Baseline (suitable for iPods) was added. (Very) experimental queue support was added. Fixes were made for some DVD titles that HandBrake would not recognize. Chapter selection, custom framerate, subtitle support, custom aspect ratio, audio samplerate selection, mp4/H.264 output, proper NTSC support, AC3 pass-through, 2-pass H.264 encoding, constant quality encoding, and grayscale encoding were implemented.
