Wine is an implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix. It does not require Microsoft Windows, but can use native Windows DLLs if they are available. It provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes.

Cygwin is a DLL which provides a Unix emulation environment for Windows. The Cygwin environment provides a complete port of such development utilities as gcc, binutils, gdb, make, etc., as well as a vast number of useful utilities.

Ganeti is virtual server management software built on top of Xen, KVM, and other open source software. It has been designed to facilitate cluster management of virtual servers and to provide fast and simple recovery after physical failures using commodity hardware.

Xen is a virtual machine monitor for x86 that supports execution of multiple guest operating systems in isolated environments.

DotGNU Portable.Net is a portable suite of tools (including a C# compiler, assembler, and runtime engine) for non-Microsoft platforms such as GNU/Linux. It is a part of the DotGNU meta-project.

Bochs is a portable x86 PC emulation software package that emulates enough of the x86 CPU, related AT hardware, and BIOS to run DOS, Windows 95, Linux, FreeBSD, and other OS's, all on your workstation.

QEMU is a fast processor emulator. Using dynamic translation it achieves a reasonable speed while being easy to port to new host CPUs. In its user mode emulation mode, it can launch Linux processes compiled for one CPU on another CPU. Linux system calls are converted because of endianness and 32/64 bit mismatches. In its full system emulation mode, it emulates a full system, including a processor and various peripherials.

Mini vMac emulates a Macintosh Plus, one of the earliest of the Macintosh computers. It can run old Macintosh software that otherwise couldn't be used on recent machines. Mini vMac requires a ROM image file to run, and so can be legally used only by those who own a Macintosh Plus.

DOSBox uses SDL to emulate the PC hardware required for running old DOS games. This includes a 386 processor, an S3/Trio video card with some tweaks to allow for older display hardware like the Tandy, a Sound Blaster Pro, the PC speaker, Tandy 3-sound, CMS/GameBlaster, Disney Sound Source, and MIDI. DOS emulation is integrated. It is possible to mount local directories as drives inside the emulator.

XWine is a graphical user interface for the WINE emulator. It provides an interface for configuring and running MS-Windows applications (MS-DOS, Windows 3.x, or Win32).
